About Aperture Bio

Aperture Bio is an in vitro  diagnostic company focused on providing healthcare professionals a rapid, accurate & cost-effective technology aimed at improving outcomes in patients suspected of having bacterial infections. This includes tests that are performed in medium and high-complexity laboratories that will ultimately help reduce the clinical conditions contributing to the alarming rate of ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE in the hospital, community & public health settings.

Unfortunately, the current and most widely used approach to suspected bacterial infections relies on legacy culture methods that can delay the delivery of actionable results by days, placing both patients and communities at risk. Without rapid results patients are treated empirically (we use our best judgement) leading to overuse and misuse of antibiotics ... and in many cases administered to patients that are  ultimately confirmed as negative.

Aperture Bio aims to solve this problem with a direct-out-of-sample testing platform that enumerates bacteria within minutes and provides a rapid, phenotypic antibiotic predictive profile within hours.

Fast, Accurate, ...... Cost Saving

Executive Summary

Nextgen methodology for ultra-fast BACTERIAL enumeration & antibiotic Predictive profiling

Bacterial and White Blood Cell Counts in <10min

image2

Reduce unnecessary overprescribing of antibiotics.   Going directly out of sample, know within minutes vs. days if there are relative levels of bacterial presence and white blood cells to help identify which patients need to be treated and which ones don't.

Antibiotic Predictive Profile (APP) in +/-3Hrs

image3

Antibiotic Profiling can be achieved in  +/- 3hrs along with uropathogen confirmation. This provides the practitioner with the actionable data necessary to treat the patient effectively within hours of obtaining a sample. laboratory diagnostics bacterial infections

High-Throughput at Low Cost

image4

Reduce laboratory testing costs by  utilizing a high-throughput platform with robotic handling  for cost-effective work-flow in the laboratory setting. Per test cost is only a few dollars compared to $100s for other testing methodologies such as PCR. The low cost and rapid nature of the test result can open new markets in your community such as skilled nursing home testing and acute care clinics where same-day results can make a difference.

Infections are now the leading cause of death and readmissions in U.S. hospitals (3) costing $24 billion per year (4) affecting over 26 million people annually, and is the largest killer of children (more than 5 million children/year)(5). bacterial infections laboratory diagnostics

Clinical improvement opportunity

The ability to rapidly enumerate live bacteria in clinical samples suspected of having bacterial infection has the potential to dramatically improve both healthcare outcomes and reduce overall healthcare expenditures.

As an example, current methods in assessing suspected UTI specimens means patients are placed on blind, empiric therapy for upwards of 3 days before actionable AST data is provided by a clinical microbiology lab. With the Aperture Bio empiriSTAT UTI test actionable antibiotic data can be delivered within hours. This short time to results has the ability to change the way UTI is approached, both in the community and in the hospital setting.

For bacteremia samples, either suspected or confirmed, the time to actionable results will be cut in half compared to current culture methods when using the Aperture Bio RAPID-B platform. These hours will save lives and decrease antibiotic burden...one of the major drivers of antibiotic resistance.

Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA)

"Because treatment of acute uncomplicated cystitis is usually empirical, it is likely that some women will be treated with a drug that does not have in vitro activity against the uropathogen. As the population resistance prevalence of a specific agent increases, the likelihood of failure outweighs the benefits of using the drug empirically."

A Public Health Issue

A World Health Problem - A World Health Solution

The precipitous rise in bacterial resistance rates throughout the world to commonly prescribed antibiotics is changing medicine, and not for the better. The Centers for Disease Control estimates 2 million Americans are afflicted annually by antibiotic-resistant pathogens (19). Major healthcare organizations such as Infectious Disease Society of America, FDA, CDC and the World Health Organization have been sounding the alarm to both the near- and long- term dire consequences of this trend.

Aperture Bio is committed to providing the healthcare community a novel tool in addressing the two major clinical drivers of antibiotic resistance, namely Overuse and Misuse of antibiotics.

Antibiotic Overuse - Legacy methods of confirming the suspicion of a bacterial infection, such as a urinary tract infection or bloodstream infection, can take upwards of 3-5 days. During this culture period the vast majority of patients will be treated "empirically". This means making an assumption that the culture is "positive" and taking a "best guess" approach to the correct antibiotic. This empiric approach in many situations leads to overuse of antibiotics in patients that don't actually have a bacterial infection. For example, national averages for urine specimens submitted for suspicion of UTI have only a 30% rate of positive urine culture, the reference standard for diagnosing a UTI. One can assume that a large percentage of the 70% of culture negative samples are still receiving antibiotic treatment. This same approach is seen in suspected bacteremia patients as well.

Antibiotic Misuse - By applying an empiric approach to addressing suspicion of bacterial infection a provider bases their antibiotic choice on past antibiotic effectiveness data within their institution or community. With the rapid and pervasive rise in antibiotic resistance the likelihood of choosing an ineffective antibiotic is rising. This can lead to ineffective treatment, recurrent infections, and costly re-hospitalizations.

treatment settings

Hospital & Emergency Care

UTIs & blood borne infections plague hospitals as one of the leading causes for HAIs, ER visits & readmissions.  The ability to quickly identify positivity (<10 min), and provide antibiotic treatment guidance, could make the difference in patient's lives while saving money. laboratory diagnostics

Longterm Care - Assisted Living

A relatively high % of elderly & senior residents experience UTIs, especially if incontinent or catheterized. Early identification is key to ensuring asymptomatic and expressive "at risk" patients are treated quickly and properly .... or identified before admission.

Community Urgent Care - Primary Care

Many patients with symptoms of a UTI seek treatment from the urgent care setting. With same day results, sometimes w/in hours, the practionor can confirm the diagnosis and offer the appropriate antibiotic treatment ... and only if necessary.

Ideal platform for institutional & commercial laboratories

Commercial & Reference Laboratories

An ideal platform for commercial laboratories looking for high throughput testing methodologies that can be profitable and offer faster than current technology results, that are highly accurate and  could be  market differentiator in a very competitive market.

Institutional & Hospital Based Laboratories

Institutional based laboratories where accurate, fast and low-cost testing means treating the patient within hours vs. days.  This also applies to managing costs as only positive results will reflex to antibiotic resistance. Saving time and money.
